QUESTION:
Hi! I am a complete novice in this area but was
interested to join your network given the obvious passion with which you
pursue your work.
I am a full time journalist but have time off in the weekends when I want to
pursue my interest in starting my own business. I have a lot of ideas but
lack confidence in them and also tend to become lazy because I am scared of
failure. I paint in my free time and my paintings have been good enough for
people to suggest that I do something constructive with them, like T shirt
art, lamps, wooden home decor items as I have a good design sense. The
problem is there is so much I want to do that I dont know where to start. I
need to motivate myself constantly. How does one initiate the ground work
required for starting your own business? Where does one begin?
Bindu!
ANSWER: Thanks for your inquiry. The FIRST thing is to build your own belief system. Understand that there is usually a difference between what you think you want and what you really want. Define the latter and envision you accomplishing it every single day. See yourself in a situation interaction with someone you are working with; ask them, how can I best help you? If money were no object, what would you want most in this world? Then LISTEN, hear and genuinely feel what they are conveying to you. If you are in contribution to them, you have earned their attention. If you conduct yourself in a way that you CARE about THEM, you will be developing relationships, building them.
Do you have a product or service you genuinely believe in? I read you have
several; PICK ONE. Are you a product of the product; meaning, can you relate
to someone the benefits you feel in a way it can help them? If you are a
servant leader, you always focus on them and how you can help them.
Decide WHICH avenue to pursue first; which one pleases you the most? That
enthusiasm and resulting art if FOCUSED will become contagious. Other people
will see and feel your passion and translate it into something that pleases
them or not.
MOTIVATE yourself by connecting with people with like minds and that are
inspiring you. Contact no less than 7 people per day that motivate and
inspire you; it will encourage your successful juices to be used in ways to
help others. Ask yourself who would benefit most from my art on T-Shirts.
Are there any non-profits trying to raise money for a particular venue that
could use your art to make their venue a success?
Do you see benefit in EARNING people's attention? Say LESS and ask MORE and
LISTEN. Become the best listener in your field. This will immediately give
you a serious edge on the competition. Don't be so quick to convince people
why you are so good; get good at asking how you can be in contribution to
them.
